Advanced Minimally Invasive Surgery

This course is design for the clinicians with experience in basic diagnostic laparoscopy or those that have taken the introductory course on laparoscopy.  In this course we will explore the world of minimally invasive surgery.  During the lecture session, we will review the specialized surgical instrumentation for advanced minimally invasive surgery, and the different surgical techniques performed under minimally invasive surgery.  A strong emphasis will be placed on laparoscopic and laparoscopic assisted procedures.  Thoracoscopy techniques including approaches, anesthesia considerations, and procedures will be presented.  Most of the surgical techniques will be illustrated with video.
In the laboratory, participants will perform a preventive gastropexy, an enterotomy, place a jejunal feeding tube, and perform cystoscopy with a laparoscopic assisted approach.  An ovariectomy or an ovaiohysterectomy, a complete left adrenalectomy and a cholecystectomy will be performed with a laparoscopic approach.  Participants will also perform a thoracoscopy with explor of the thoracic cavity.  There is the option of performing a pericardial window, lung biopsy and partial lung lobectomy. The laboratory is limited in size to three people per animal.
