Focus on the Equine Spine: Thoracolumbar Region
This 5-day course teaches the principles of detailed thoracolumbar spinal evaluation and focuses on an integrative and evidence-based approach to treating spinal disorders in horses. Topics include functional spinal anatomy, pathology, physical examination, gait analysis, diagnostic imaging, local anesthesia, and medical and surgical management of back problems. The course will present a balance of clinical experience and review of relevant spinal research. Theoretical and practical information will be provided in morning lecture and afternoon laboratory settings. Integrative therapies will be presented in an evidenced-based format and include saddle fitting, massage, chiropractic, acupuncture, rehabilitation, and physical therapy as these modalities apply to the management of thoracolumbar dysfunction. Daily laboratories will provide demonstrations and opportunities for hands-on experience of the various treatment modalities; with an emphasis on chiropractic evaluation and treatment techniques. Summary lectures will outline current diagnostic and therapeutic methods and provide discussion for development of a consensus on standards of care for the effective management of thoracolumbar disorders in horses involved in diverse athletic disciplines.
This course will offer an intensive, clinically-oriented, educational opportunity for both licensed veterinary and human professionals with interest in the treatment of back problems in horses. This course is not a certification program. For practitioners already certified in acupuncture, chiropractic, massage, or physical therapy, this course will provide a review of recent advances in diagnostic and therapeutic capabilities within these areas and explore rider influences on spinal function and performance in both lecture and laboratory settings. Discussions will be scheduled for individuals to share personal experiences and approaches to evaluating and treating back problems in a guided format in an effort to develop a consensus for standards of care. For non-certified practitioners, this course will provide practical training in the detailed evaluation of the thoracolumbar region using multidisciplinary treatment approaches under the guidance of experienced instructors. Participants with interest in pursuing advanced training in the various modalities reviewed within this course will be directed to other existing certification programs.
