Academic Veterinary PositionsMerck-Medial Veterinary Scholars
This program's
mission is to provide an opportunity for veterinary schools to expose
students in their first and second years of veterinary medical school
to biomedical research. Paid opportunities are available at many veterinary
schools. Applications are typically due in January or February for
research opportunities in the upcoming summer. This site also shows
summer research opportunities available with Merck-Merial.
Veterinary Business Management Association
CSU has an active
student chapter and required junior externships for this aspect of
the profession.
Center for Public and Corporate Veterinary Medicine
Look under the industry link for opportunities. These clerkships/externships are open to students from all U.S. Veterinary Colleges.
American Association of Corporate and Public Practice Veterinarians
This page links many of the veterinary corporate webpages. Each of them have Career Centers that often advertise summer opportunities.
Banfield, The Pet Hospital
This site is the homepage for Banfield, The Pet Hospital. Select "Careers" to find out about career opportunities.
Banfield hosts senior externships and summer employment for first through third year students.
Clinics are located throughout the nation.
National Veterinary Associates
NVA owns 101 companion animal veterinary hospitals in 30 states. Job postings are listed from the website under "Career Opportunities".
Veterinary Centers of America
VCA hosts externships for junior and senior students and summer employment can be organized through their recruiter.
VetCor
VetCor has 38 hospitals nationwide mainly in the east. They currently do not
have an externship program.

Wyoming
State Vet Lab
Two externships are offered at this laboratory. Laramie is 65 miles from Fort
Collins.

US Food and Drug Administration-Center for Veterinary Medicine
The Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM) regulates the manufacture and distribution of food additives and drugs that will be given to animals. Career opportunities can be found from this homepage.
National Institute of Health
Typical titles include "veterinary medical officer", "veterinary medical science" and "laboratory animal veterinarian".
USDA: Animal Plant Health Inspection Service-Veterinary Service Career Employment
This site explains careers in the veterinary service area and has current job postings.
USDA: Food Safety and Inspection Service
This site has direct links to employment opportunities, application forms and information on current states hiring veterinary medical officers. FSIS is the largest federal employer of veterinarians. Application for jobs can occur up to 9 months prior to graduation.
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency

US Air Force

Rural Area Veterinary Services
Many trips coordinated by this group are international. Plan early, as they tend to book way in advance. The international trips usually require previous domestic RAVS experience.
O.C. Hubert Student Fellowship in International Health---Provides an opportunity for 3rd and 4th year medical and veterinary students to gain public health experience in an international setting. Fellows spend 4-6 weeks in a developing country working on a priority health problem in conjunction with CDC staff. Seven fellows are selected each year and receive a stipend of $3,000 to cover travel costs. Envirovet (announcement usually comes in February for the coming summer -application due at end of March) Focus is on careers in conservation medicine, wildlife health, and/or ecosystem health. One program is usually planned in developing countries. Envirovet faculty are internationally recognized experts who are fully engaged in relevant fields within the overall context of wildlife and ecosystem health. GR Dodge Frontiers for Veterinary Medicine Fellowships-- Possible funding source for defined research and projects-plan well in advance!

This is the website for coordination of the matching internship and residency program. The new institutional information will be available for viewing September of 2008. The application deadline is early December.
Non-Matching Internships
Non-matching internships begin advertising their internships as early as January. To do a search for these, you can enter the word "internship" in the text area provided for "responsibility and skills" once you are in the database.
