Course Description: Colorado State University has a long history as a referral center for problem mares. This course is an opportunity to learn diagnostic and therapeutic procedures as well as clinical insight and practice tips from the experts regarding problem mares. Lectures begin by reviewing common and less common reproductive abnormalities and current techniques for reproductive evaluation of mares. Additional lectures will describe problems of the equine ovary, oviduct, uterus and cervix, as well as problems in early pregnancy and issues associated with reproductive behavior. The final lecture will summarize management and treatment options for problem mares. Hands-on laboratory sessions will detail current techniques for collection and interpretation of uterine culture, cytology and biopsy samples, vaginal speculum examinations and endoscopic evaluation of the uterine lumen. Equipment and procedures for uterine infusion and lavage will be reviewed. Additional laboratory sessions will be devoted to techniques for culture and identification of bacterial organisms as well as how to set up a practical microbiology laboratory in your own clinic.

Equine Embryo Transfer

Course Description: This course is designed to teach techniques for collection and transfer of equine embryos. Lectures will cover management of the donor mare, embryo recovery procedures, management of the recipient mare, transfer procedures, embryo evaluation, embryo cooling for transport, embryo cryopreservation. Laboratory sessions will aid veterinarians in identifying and handling embryos and assessing embryo quality. Veterinarians will experience hands-on procedures for the recovery of embryos and surgical and non-surgical transfer. Upon completion of this course, practitioners should feel comfortable with the recovery and transfer of equine embryos.
