Clinical work at the ERL

Equine Reproduction Internships

The Equine Reproduction Laboratory, Colorado State University, is accepting applications for an Equine Breeding Farm Internship. The goal of the program is to provide advanced training in equine breeding farm procedures and management. The program is aimed preferentially for people with a sincere desire to pursue a career in the equine breeding industry.

Interns will participate in a one (1) year program. One person will start on January 1 and finish on December 31 of that same year. The second person will start on July 1 and finish on June 30 of the following year. Applicants should have recently completed a BS degree in Equine Sciences, Animal Science or related discipline. This is a non-degree program. A certificate of achievement will be provided upon successful completion of the program. Job placement assistance will be available upon request.

Salary and housing on-site at the Equine Reproduction Laboratory on the Foothills Campus of Colorado State University will be provided.

Responsibilities of interns include (but may not be limited to):

  1. Assistance with the Clinical Equine Reproduction Program (horse handling, herd health management, record keeping, etc)
  2. Assistance with general laboratory functions (including autoclaving, equipment cleaning, laundry, reception, etc)
  3. Participation in foal watch and foaling (provide backup and assistance to students in the Foaling Management class)
  4. After hours help with artificial inseminations, embryo transfer and horse arrivals/departures (rotate with or provide backup to graduate students)
  5. Weekend on call (after-hours availability every other weekend for each intern)
  6. Night barn checks (i.e. monitor client-owned horses)
  7. Evening security check (i.e. gates shut and locked; facility doors locked)
