APHI Research Synopsis

APHI was established to encourage collaborative, multi-disciplinary research and to provide a structure for sharing and exchanging information, expertise and facilities among Colorado State University, collaborating institutions and government agencies throughout the US and world. APHI personnel have made significant research efforts on topics important to the agricultural economy in Colorado(e.g., Johne’s disease diagnosis and prevention, CWD diagnosis, diagnosis and prevention efforts related to important zoonotic food-safety pathogens, the epidemiology and economic impact of Equine West Nile Virus infection, infection control and biosecurity for agricultural operations and veterinary hospitals).

The Animal Population Health Institute also remains involved heavily with the prevention and diagnosis of diseases of economic importance through activities of the PEIIAD.  Many diseases prioritized for research at PEIIAD were those designated as "List A- Immediate action and response" or "List B- Reportable" by the Office International des Epizooties (OIE), because these designations carried significant import/export impacts.  Also studied were several diseases indigenous to the United States that affected the movement and marketing of animals and animal products, such as vesicular stomatitis, brucellosis, paratuberculosis (Johne’s disease), chronic wasting disease of deer and elk, and E. coli O157:H7 infection, Salmonella infection, and infection with bacteria resistant to antimicrobial drugs.
