International Connections
ISVEECVEADSS, hosted the foremost international meeting of veterinary epidemiologists (International Society for Veterinary Epidemiology and Economics, ISVEE9) in Breckenridge, CO in 2000. There were approximately 600 participants from 58 countries in attendance. more about ISVEE> ISVEE X ProceedingsProceedings of ISVEE X, which was held in Chile in 2003 are available as a CD-ROM upon request. Please forward your requests to APHI and include US$ 25 payable to ISVEE to cover shipping/handling costs. ISVEE XIPlans are progressing for ISVEE XI, which will be held in Cairns, Australia in 2006. APHI Scientists Participate in Uruguay WorkshopDr. Francisco Zagmutt-Vergara and Mr. Aaron Reeves traveled to Punta del Este, Uruguay and participated in a two-week study/workshop, which was co-sponsored by the Animal Population Health Institute (APHI) and the US Department of Agriculture, Veterinary Services Branch (USDA:APHIS:VS) and other Uruguayan agencies. During the first week, a validation study for the North American Disease Simulation Model (Spread Model) was completed in which data from the Uruguay outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) was used. A scientific paper describing the results of this study is forthcoming. During the second week, Dr. Zagmutt-Vergara served as an instructor in a workshop for approximately 27 Uruguayan veterinarians from universities, government and private practice, including the Director of Uruguayan Veterinary Services, Dr. Recaredo Ugarte. The purpose of the workshop was twofold: to provide an update on FMD and to demonstrate and teach the spread model. Participants were provided background information on the usefulness of modeling for investigating animal disease outbreaks and control and preventive measures. Also, participants learned to use the spread model through hands-on training and practice. Mr. Reeves was instrumental in serving as the model implementation technical advisor in the training. At the end of the course, participants were given a copy of the model and associated documentation to take back to their workplaces. For additional information on the North American Disease Simlation Model, please contact Dr. Zagmutt-Vergara. UN-FAO Collaborating CentreCVEADSS, which was incorporated into the Animal Population Health Institute in 2002, is a recognized collaborating center for the United Nations -Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in the field of veterinary epidemiology and animal disease surveillance systems. An FAO Collaborating Centre provides technical advice, expertise and consultation on specific subjects to FAO Headquarters, field projects and Member Countries and assists in the organization and implementation of training activities. more about FAO Centres> TSE ConferenceIn September 2003 , APHI hosted the TSE in Animal Populations Conference in Fort Collins, CO. This conference was sponsored by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, International forum for TSE and Food Safety, Office International des Epizooties, and the US Department of Agriculture: APHIS. A summary and the proceedings of this conference are available below as PDF documents. International Research ProjectsAPHI personnel remain active in collaborating internationally on a variety of research projects. Current projects include research in antimicrobial resistance, animal disease surveillance systems, and diagnostic techniques. There are ten international on-going projects (2003 - 2005). more> |
