Academic Opportunities with APHI

Through its programmatic efforts and laboratory activities, APHI has contributed to the education of  graduate students, undergraduate students, and professional veterinary medicine students.

Graduate Education Opportunities

Due to its administrative placement within the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences (CVMBS), APHI is uniquely poised to facilitate opportunities for graduate study leading to a Master's or Doctorate in the Departments of Clinical Sciences (CS), Environmental & Radiological Health Sciences (ERHS) and Microbiology, Immunology & Pathology (MIP).  Sixteen APHI faculty members with diverse interests and expertise are available to work within their individual departmental guidelines and design a tailored program to meet individual student needs.  All but two APHI faculty are members of one the above three departments.  Additional information on APHI faculty and current initiatives is available by selecting the Prospective Students link.

According to Colorado State University policies, graduate students are admitted into a specific department; APHI does not have a formal graduate degree program.  Interested students must apply to Colorado State University Graduate School and meet all admission requirements for the University and the department of interest.

Undergraduate Education Opportunities

In Spring 2004, an ERHS student, Ms. Lauren Kishimoto, completed her 400-hour, required internship under the direction of Dr. Celia Antognoli.  Lauren's internship focused on laboratory and field-based research activities regarding vesicular stomatitis and Johne's disease in dairy cattle.

A limited number of undergraduate student internships are available through the Training and Outreach Program.  Please contact Dr. Barbara McCarthy for additional information.

Professional Veterinary Medicine Student Opportunities

For the past two years, APHI faculty member, Dr. Paul Morley, has developed an optional "Honors Option" for VM714, the Veterinary Preventive Medicine class that he coordinates.  Students who opt to participate in this opportunity are required to do extra academic work equivalent to approximately 40 hours or more for the Honors credit.  The activities are approved by the PVM Curriculum Committee prior to initiation.  In the past two years, PVM students have performed group research activities.  One research study focused on the outcome of equine West Nile Virus cases and resulted in a published paper.  more
