The Merck Company Foundation has funded summer research programs at veterinary schools since 1988, and established the Merck-Merial Veterinary Scholars Program in 1998. The program became the Merial Veterinary Scholars Program in 2009. The program's mission is to provide an opportunity for veterinary schools to expose students in their first and second years of veterinary medical school to biomedical research.

The Merial Veterinary Scholars Program features a rich diversity of research experiences for participants working with some of the world’s leading scientists.

Your summer of discovery begins when you choose your field of interest and request a position from a number of participating laboratories and faculty members. Your mentor will provide you with detailed information on your research project, and ensure that you receive the training necessary to be successful. Hands-on experience means you won’t just learn about biomedical research from a book or lecture, you’ll be a part of the research in the lab.
