The College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences will celebrate generosity and academic achievement at this year’s Scholarship and Awards Luncheon on April 25 at the Hilton Hotel.
In the 2008-2009 academic year, the College distributed 390 scholarships and awards, with a total dollar amount of $1,463,158. Recently endowed awards include the Carol B. Oakes Memorial Scholarship, Louis Goelz Memorial Scholarship, Thunderhead Food Animal Scholarship, and the John Veitch Memorial Scholarship. The DVM Class of 1960 Scholarship is a new pending endowment. New annual scholarships are the DVM Class of 2009 Scholarship, DVM Class of 1999 Scholarship, and DVM Class of 1984 Scholarship.
“At the heart of all our programs are our 1,400 students spread throughout 11 graduate degree programs, three combined-degree graduate programs, and three undergraduate majors in Biomedical Sciences, Environmental Health and Microbiology,” said Dr. Lance Perryman, Dean, College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. “We honor these students at the Scholarship and Awards Luncheon. We also recognize the donors, each of whom has made these generous scholarships possible. Even in financially uncertain times, their support of our students has been unwavering and for that we are deeply appreciative.”
Dr. Perryman noted that for many CVMBS students, scholarships mean the difference between being in school and being shut out by a lack of funds.
“Scholarships also help us compete for the best and brightest students nationwide, raising the level of excellence throughout the College,” said Dr. Perryman. “As our nation reinvests in science, so must we invest in our students.”
