Update from the Dean's Office

The month of July is typically a quiet one on the Colorado State University campus, and this summer is no different. Summer session is moving along, a variety of conference groups are enjoying CSU's hospitality, and many faculty and staff are taking advantage of the slower pace to fit in much-deserved vacations. That being said, I still have numerous items to share with you in this update.

In June, the University hosted candidates for two administrative positions, the Vice President for Research and the Vice Provost for Outreach and Strategic Partnerships. Each of the candidates for the positions has gone through an interview process (with the exception of one candidate for the VP for Research who needed to reschedule), and we expect these searches to be completed in July.

For the College, we have initiated the search for a new hospital director, whom we hope to have in place by the end of this calendar year. On June 29, I met with the search committee for the new hospital administrator position, though these two positions have been staggered so the new hospital director can contribute to the selection of the new hospital administrator. If you have input on either of these searches, please contact the search directors. Dr. Paul Lunn is chair of the hospital director search committee and Dr. Tim Hackett is chair of the hospital administrator search committee.

The College received good news in June when the President and the Provost authorized 20 new tenure track positions for the University, three of which were awarded to our College. Colleges that provided matching funds were successful in receiving more than two positions, so we are very pleased with the outcome of this tenure allotment. The new CVMBS faculty positions are for a molecular oncologist, canine geneticist and an anatomical pathologist for the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (D-Lab).

In addition to receiving a new tenure track position, the D-Lab (as reported in the June edition of E-Insight ) received $3.5 million in planning funding for the new Diagnostic Medicine Center. We are currently in the process of selecting an architectural firm and should have an announcement soon. In June, Drs. Barbara Powers, Director of the D-Lab and Hana Van Campen (MIP), joined Dr. Tim Holt (Clinical Sciences) and me in Pueblo for the Colorado Cattlemen's Association Convention (CCA). In addition to giving presentations in various committee meetings, we were able to thank members of CCA for their political support resulting in state funding for the new D-Lab facility.

July brings an end to Foresight Planning work with the Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges (AAVMC) with a synthesis meeting in Sacramento, Calif., on July 10 and 11 (see related articles on Foresight Planning in the April and May editions of E-Insight ). I am anxious to see the outcome of this project and look forward to sharing the results with you in the near future. I and other faculty and staff members from the College also will be attending the American Veterinary Medical Association convention in Honolulu July 15-19. I will preside over the AAVMC meeting with other deans, and various faculty members from the College will be making presentations at the convention. The College will host an alumni reception on Sunday, July 16, and we encourage all alums to stop by and see what's new at the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences.
